A status for working alone, without the trade register
Created by Law 22-23 of 18 December 2022, auto-entrepreneur status lets an individual carry out, in their own name, an activity on the list set by the National Auto-Entrepreneur Agency (ANAE), with annual turnover of DZD 5,000,000 at most. Registration is not with the trade register but with the national auto-entrepreneur register kept by ANAE.
Registration happens online on anae.dz
Since January 2024, the whole process goes through the ANAE platform:
- Create an account, validated by email and phone
- Enter your identity details and choose your activity from the ANAE list
- Upload the documents: national ID card, recent proof of residence, photo, and a diploma or qualification if the activity requires one
- ANAE processes the application within 3 working days at most, then issues the auto-entrepreneur card, valid for 5 years
Taxes: 0.5% of turnover
Auto-entrepreneurs fall under the single flat-rate tax (IFU) at a reduced rate of 0.5% of turnover, with a minimum of DZD 10,000 per year. This tax replaces income tax (IRG) and VAT: your invoices carry no VAT. Returns follow the IFU calendar, with a provisional return before 30 June and a final return before 20 January of the following year. For micro-importing carried out under this status, the tax is paid to customs when the goods are cleared (2026 Finance Act).
Social security: CASNOS
Like all self-employed people, auto-entrepreneurs join CASNOS. They can choose a flat DZD 24,000 per year instead of the standard contribution (15% of income, with a minimum of DZD 43,200 per year since Executive Decree 26-257 of July 2026).
The limits of the status
The status is deliberately simple, which comes with a few rules to know:
- Only activities on the ANAE list are eligible
- Annual turnover must not exceed DZD 5,000,000; above that for three years in a row, you must register with the trade register to keep operating, under the corresponding tax regime
- If you declare no turnover (or a "nil" turnover) during the 3 years after registration, you may be removed from the national auto-entrepreneur register
- The activity is carried out in your own name: you cannot take on partners under this status
Auto-entrepreneur or company?
The status suits testing an activity or working alone at very low cost: at least DZD 10,000 of tax and DZD 24,000 of CASNOS per year. As soon as you want partners, to stay above DZD 5,000,000 of turnover or to carry out an activity missing from the ANAE list, an EURL or SARL becomes the right choice.
